Paul wrote Corinthians, Peter wrote 1 Peter. they didn't know when Jesus was to come back, after he had ascended. but their words remain true today, because time could well be short for us. bear in mind Abraham was 2500 years before Christ, we're only 2000 years after christ... so using a biblical timeline, we're still in the "time has grown short" period
