Japan's Natives. Treated similarly as Canada's First Nations people. Japan has made great attempts at assimilation because "One Japan, One Race" mentality.

I have a very good article by Emiko Ohnuki-Tierney
that discusses the different tribes and cultures within the Ainu. Basically they are indigenous peoples to japan in the north. For a while the occupied most of the northern portion of the mainland(honshu) as well as the other large more northern island, Hokkaido.
