Can anyone recommend any good books on modern art?

I've been going on gallery dates quite often lately and i'm starting to get tired of having to look up individual artists separately, would be nice to have an overview of the most important movements and artists.

Ways of seeing by john Berger might be a good place to start. It's more of an overview of changing thoughts and overarching ideas but I think it touches on a lot of relevant artists. The BBC made a pretty good series out of it you can watch on youtube too. The shock of the new by Robert Hughes is a another good one to check out

Wish my school offered more in dept oil painting classes that has a history of oil painting course as pre-requisite. Anyways I am looking for some good sources on the history of oil painting, particularly interested in the medium (oil paints) themselves and how they were developed through history and how that effected who was able to become a painter and what paintings actually got commissioned.

The idea that "most of what passes as art" is "just a business venture" is absurd in a variety of ways, and reeks of smug adolescence. You're insinuating intent in such a vast body of work in a completely reductive and uninformed way, and then secondarily implying that that intent is somehow meaningful to the artistic outcome. You also set up "beauty" as a requirement for art, but then offer essentially no description of what that is, other than declaring that most art lacks it, which is entirely pointless. I did offer a description; I said that beauty can be understood as a quality of poignancy. "Beauty" as a concept is so abstract that using context to describe it is almost a necessity in informal discussion.

It's largely not worth addressing. the fact that shady business dealing exist in the art world does not by any means indict the the vast majority of art, as you seemed to be implying. Some Italian restaurants are mob fronts, and yet that does not invalidate an entire cuisine. Furthermore, I would deny that it would matter even if it was all for financial gain. That puts too much importance on the artists intent and vision, sweeping aside any agency on the viewers part, and simultaneously reinforcing the lame idea that art is an endeavour free from any want for material wealth or reward.

it's absolutely fine to have personal opinions about art. what you like and don't like, or even what is and isn't art. However, it is entirely a different thing to prescribe those opinions to art as a whole and forward them as meaningful in any way. this is the equivalent of entering an argument and going "well, that's just my opinion." if you have no interest in defending your point of view, don't forward it in such a way. I'm not saying it requires an objective metric, but at the very least some sort of logical argument. It's entirely useless to declare openly that art is definable and then refuse to define it. Oil paints came into use around the 14/15th century. Jan van Eyck is one painter who constantly receives the accolade of "first oil painter" but I'd say if you dig around you might find a few others. Before oils the standard was tempera(egg) paint which has great colour and can be long lasting if preserved. It is not as tough as oils though, and the slow thick nature of oil paint allows for some tricks that aren't so easy(or even possible) in tempera.

The medium can be traced across multiple schools around Europe over a few centuries, might be an idea to have a look at some of those to trace how it develops. Oils are like the HD 1080p master race of their day and things quickly become about spectacle and outdoing everything else in terms of realism and effects. It's also interesting to trace some of the materials themselves. Some colours are more popular than others due to price/ ease of access at different times. On top of that a lot of these lads kept their recipes secret, you don't want the competition figuring out how you get those amazing blues etc... so we often have no idea how they were achieving certain effects materially.

A good resource for this stuff is http://www.nationalgallery.org.uk/

They have a restoration department that often puts out nice reports on paintings from different periods and goes over what they can find chemically to give clues as to how they did it. it can be pretty interesting.

More about history and movements but can be helpful in giving context and finding interesting stuff. In terms of books Grab anything really, there's not really one book that is prescribed as "definitive" for art history. Anything published by Routledge tends to be of decent quality though

The arguments are endless, nobody is right or wrong, etc.

For me art is about telling a story. Either through the skill of the artist, or through what is depicted. You can be shocked, delighted, inspired or moved.
There is no limit to what art can be, so long as it's trying to be sincere in some way.
A child's wild colorings can be art as much as a veteran sculpturer's newest installation.
But, when either of them stop caring about their work and just churn out the same thing over and over it stops being art for me. There's no new story being told, and we as viewers learn nothing from the experience.
Because that's what a story, and what art should be: a new experience.

Ayy, im not sure if you know it or not, but your definition fits with that of a famous philosopher, John Dewey. He argues that art is "an" experience, as opposed to just experience. I haven't read him in a few years now, but if i recall, for him, once a thing in the world becomes routine, or tedious (such as when a single thing is churned out over and over) then it ceases to be an experience and blends into the everyday.

This is also a common argument for inclusion of artworks into museums, as it creates another separation of the everyday vs. an experience.

First up is Belgian painter and professional smug prick Luc Tuymans. His stuff is often concerned with images themselves and the way the come to stand for things in our mind. or something llike that. He certainly has a way of handling the paint, At times the resemble the under paintings traditionally hidden beneath refined layers but with a weird inner glow.

I'm no expert but I do like some of the sculpture in the style. The emphasis on form and movement is fantastic. It's coming from the same place as cubism as far as its breakdown of space but it has a whole load of social and political baggage centered around modernism attached to it that I'm not qualified to speak on. It does look pretty cool though. It's like expressionism without the angst.

Art today its a mental process itself,that requires the participation of the viewer and therefore of the society and the signs in it,the physical product (the one that you call artpiece) its just one of the signs that are visible for the viewer,and the work take form and "meaning" in relation with another signs in the intelectual spectre of the viewer.

Please, I'm not saying that it's essential for something to be in a museum to be art, but you'd have to be ignorant of the last 100 years of art history to not accept that the art-world and its branches have a monopoly on things being considered art.

What happen its just a consequence of the capitalism and his asimilation,like how a bunch of the clasics of today like VanGogh,Monet,Manet,Courbet,the Dada,the Fauvism,all at first rejected for the Academia,but today big Masters.
Then you have the Land art saying "fuck museums" but end asimilated by the institutions too.
The institution hate this non-materalistic forms of art (Land art,performance,ephemeral art),because theres is nothing to see,nothing to put values on(monetary value too),and that why people hate contemporany art too.
