Most of the time it was numbers and commanders that decided things, and "unit quality" wasnt really an issue.
The experienced troops of one army were about as good as the other, more or less, and the same for the inexperienced ones.

The significant successes of the mongols and turks to conquer Eastern Europe and mount relatively strong invasions into Central Europe, with a major reliance on their cavalry, implies a far greater threat to me.

Medieval Europe seems so contingent on castles, developing armor, and not particularly outstanding infantry, unlike the Renaissance onward.
