This. Samurai shaved top of the head when they went in a war so that the helmet did not slip. Before they shaved only in wartime but after they began to shave it even in peacetime so that they could fight anytime.

The Samurai were from a social group akin to criminal gangs today who often cover themselves in tattoos or otherwise mark themselves as being part of the group. It was more than just a high school popularity contest, everything they valued in life depended on their reputation, the appearance of a Samurai is difficult to maintain and helps prove they are legit. You know they are unlikely to betray their lord or flee from a fight which makes you think twice before attempting to do so. Only in periods of chaos and instability were they tested and disreputable "ronin" began to appear.

Other cultures had similar practices.
