Can someone explain the Schism to me? Why did it happen?

The French cardinals elect an Italian as pope as the mob of murderous Romans gather outside the Vatican, and then flee to Avignon and elect another pope who had just spent the last few years pillaging and slaughtering his way through northern Italy at the head of a mercenary army. National feeling is growing in Europe with the backdrop of the 100 years war, and the Italians who before violently resented sending tithes to Avignon are now in open war with the French for control of the papacy.
