With no romans nor anyone speaking latin inside, a feeble tourist trap made for the profit. Somewhat disrepectful if you think about it.
>>
>>3384150

why? even when the building was still visited by the direct grandsons and granddaughters of those that had built it, it had already been burned down and rebuilt once, and it would soon become a Christian church before the actual Empire fell, one that never stopped receiving visits from the same inhabitants of the same city for almost two thousand years, people who's language was Roman Latin which slowly became vulgar Latin, then Italian, history kept taking place in there as it does now.

you have this idea of history being a frozen image instead of a continuous thing. Europe is chock-full of ancient constructions that never fell out of use and changed with their inhabitants. Destroying them would be wrong, but rebuilding them would simply be another stage in their history for someone looking at things five hundred years in the future.

I say, rather than have patches of grass and naked rock cooking under the sun like in the circus maximus, we could just mark what was originally there and cut a few new stones to put next to them, taking care to just cover up and never replace.

Yeah, in modern Alexandria Egypt, sorta kinda. They built a new 'great library of alexandria' it's a modern building but it's meant to be the spiritual successes to the ancient one. It's been having some problems though.

I think I heard that they are building a new 'great lighthouse' too.
>>
>>3384195
>Egyptology
The only reason why a lot of Egyptian shit got restored. The fucking muslims destroyed Sphinx's nose and even tried to blow up the pyramids because they thought it's idolatry.
>WW1
Fair point. But it was European architecture to begin with, and destroying it wasn't the goal, just collateral damage (I think Warsaw was the only exception, sadly). In fact during the Monte Cassino fights the Germans were under strict rules to avoid causing damage to historical objects if possible.
>>
>>3384199
People addicted to destruction are subhumans. You probably love post-apocalyptic fiction too.
>>
>>3384215

They're trying to remake the colossus of Rhodes too

I'm split on Alexandria, of course it's a really pointless quest to try to rebuild the library as it 'might' have been since we have no idea, but the modern building is just not really nice to look at.

Something i think totally SHOULD get restored is the Parthenon, it wasn't seriously damaged until WW1 and it was a really dumb, regrettable fuck up that shouldn't have happened, and we really know exactly how it's supposed to look. Even if a lot of the decoration is lost, for the sake of preserving it i would still rebuild enough of it that it's in a more solid condition, lest there's nothing but the foundations next time they decide to blow it up.
>>
After the first main temple in Jerusalem was burned the Jews built it again. Then it got wrecked and remains wrecked. But for a really long time it was rebuilt.
>>
>>3384249
The damage to the Parthenon occurred in the 17th century not WW1 and the Greeks are currently trying to restore it

Julius Caesar once got this wacky idea that he was going to rebuild Carthage and re-settle it with Romans. It worked out for a while until the Vandals took it over in 429 AD, at which point the city became a launching point for barbarian raids against Italy.

>>
>>3384290
>stolen
Can't be stolen if it was nobody's property to start with.
>kept the pyramids relatively safe for more than a millenium
Let's see:
>At the end of the twelfth century al-Malek al-Aziz Othman ben Yusuf, Saladin's son and heir, attempted to demolish the pyramids, starting with Menkaure's. The workmen whom Al-Aziz had recruited to demolish the pyramid found it almost as expensive to destroy as to build. They stayed at their job for eight months. They were not able to remove more than one or two stones each day at a cost of tiring themselves out utterly. Some used wedges and levers to move the stones, while others used ropes to pull them down. When a stone fell, it would bury itself in the sand, requiring extraordinary efforts to free it. Wedges were used to split the stones into several pieces, and a cart was used to carry it to the foot of the escarpment, where it was left. Far from accomplishing what they intended to do, they merely spoiled the pyramid by leaving a large vertical gash in its north face.
Basically the muslims attempted to demolish the pyramids completely but were too stupid to figure out how.

Really makes you think...The Aegyptomania started in times where archeologists were not as strictly regulated as they are now and led to outright looting. But to your defense many Egyptians were not exactely repulsed by British gold either.

>Basically the muslims attempted to demolish the pyramids completely but were too stupid to figure out how.
You mention a single ruler who apparently wasn't even that hell-bent on the destruction. Muslims had shitload of time to do so. If they were exceptional "cultural destroyers" as you make them to be, there would be no pyramids left.

A 2010 study on Jewish ancestry by Atzmon-Ostrer et al. stated "Two major groups were identified by principal component, phylogenetic, and identity by descent (IBD) analysis: Middle Eastern Jews and European/Syrian Jews. The IBD segment sharing and the proximity of European Jews to each other and to southern European populations suggested similar origins for European Jewry and refuted large-scale genetic contributions of Central and Eastern European and Slavic populations to the formation of Ashkenazi Jewry", as both groups – the Middle Eastern Jews and European/Syrian Jews – shared common ancestors in the Middle East about 2500 years ago.

There was, in a corner of the world, a wonder of the world; this wonder was called the Summer Palace. Art has two principles, the Idea, which produces European art, and the Chimera, which produces oriental art. The Summer Palace was to chimerical art what the Parthenon is to ideal art. All that can be begotten of the imagination of an almost extra-human people was there. It was not a single, unique work like the Parthenon. It was a kind of enormous model of the chimera, if the chimera can have a model. Imagine some inexpressible construction, something like a lunar building, and you will have the Summer Palace. Build a dream with marble, jade, bronze and porcelain, frame it with cedar wood, cover it with precious stones, drape it with silk, make it here a sanctuary, there a harem, elsewhere a citadel, put gods there, and monsters, varnish it, enamel it, gild it, paint it, have architects who are poets build the thousand and one dreams of the thousand and one nights, add gardens, basins, gushing water and foam, swans, ibis, peacocks, suppose in a word a sort of dazzling cavern of human fantasy with the face of a temple and palace, such was this building. The slow work of generations had been necessary to create it. This edifice, as enormous as a city, had been built by the centuries, for whom? For the peoples. For the work of time belongs to man. Artists, poets and philosophers knew the Summer Palace; Voltaire talks of it. People spoke of the Parthenon in Greece, the pyramids in Egypt, the Coliseum in Rome, Notre-Dame in Paris, the Summer Palace in the Orient. If people did not see it they imagined it. It was a kind of tremendous unknown masterpiece, glimpsed from the distance in a kind of twilight, like a silhouette of the civilization of Asia on the horizon of the civilization of Europe.

This wonder has disappeared.
>>
>>3386428
One day two bandits entered the Summer Palace. One plundered, the other burned. Victory can be a thieving woman, or so it seems. The devastation of the Summer Palace was accomplished by the two victors acting jointly. Mixed up in all this is the name of Elgin, which inevitably calls to mind the Parthenon. What was done to the Parthenon was done to the Summer Palace, more thoroughly and better, so that nothing of it should be left. All the treasures of all our cathedrals put together could not equal this formidable and splendid museum of the Orient. It contained not only masterpieces of art, but masses of jewelry. What a great exploit, what a windfall! One of the two victors filled his pockets; when the other saw this he filled his coffers. And back they came to Europe, arm in arm, laughing away. Such is the story of the two bandits.

We Europeans are the civilized ones, and for us the Chinese are the barbarians. This is what civilization has done to barbarism.

Charles George Gordon, who was then a 27-year-old captain in the Royal Engineers and part of the 1860 Anglo-French expeditionary force, wrote about his experience:

"We went out, and, after pillaging it, burned the whole place, destroying in a vandal-like manner most valuable property which [could] not be replaced for four millions...
You can scarcely imagine the beauty and magnificence of the places we burnt. It made one's heart sore to burn them; in fact, these places were so large, and we were so pressed for time, that we could not plunder them carefully. Quantities of gold ornaments were burnt, considered as brass. It was wretchedly demoralising work for an army."

Yeah, known as Wood Henge, it was a series of concentric circles made of poles stuck in the ground -- maybe had a roof, maybe was a wood-based version of the various stone circles.

The poles long ago rotted away, but archeologists found he sockets they sat in. By measuring dirt compaction and diameter of the socket, they can estimate size and weight of the poles, which gives them, roughly, length. So we know longest poles were at the center, which would fit either the "roofed" or "Stonehenge-analogue" theory.

Also, google up "car henge."

Warsaw is actually very interesting since the Old Town and some other areas were rebuilt very well... but not to their pre-WW2 state.

Even the Old Town had quite a few 19th and early 20th century buildings, and Warsaw in general had quite a lot of very nice Art Nouveau architecture. It was quite a vibrant city. But few actual records survived, not enough for reconstruction for the most part.

However, there existed a large number of earlier panoramas, paintings of the city and such, especially from the late 18th century.

So much of Warsaw and especially the Old Town was essentially rebuilt to their late 18th century state rather than the 1940s state they were destroyed in.

They did do it very "properly", there were hundreds of architects, art historians, etc. making sure they got it right.
