The hindus had their holy Soma that they valued highly. "Soma is greater than Shiva, greater than Brahma"
It was undoubtedly a psychoactive preparation. It was however kept so secret that the recipe was forgotten. There has been much speculation about components.
For me the most convincing interpretation is that is was an ayahuasca analogue, using Peganum harmala (syrian rue, harmala, esfand) as a source of MAO inhibitors and a species of Acacia for the DMT.
There seems to be a linguistic connection: Soma --> Hamoa --> Harmala

The hindu pantheon looks like its pulled straight out of an DMT trip and it is not uncommon for users today to encounter a hindu entity.

Harmala is still used in the middle east as protective incense and by some mystic sects to aid in achieving gnostic states.

Understanding the soma in mentioned in the Vedas to be some sort of drug is a misunderstanding of Vedic literature and thought. Soma-rasa is a sort of nectar just as milk is a sort of nectar. To think the Vedas would advocate any sort of intoxicant is ignorance, as use of drugs is vaamaachaara, or considered inauspicious black magic.

Sure, but what would the effect of Soma on humans? I remember another anon saying that it would lead to insanity for a certain amount of time, yet I've never checked on his sources. Is this the case? And if this is the case, wouldn't be reasonable to speculate about Soma being a psychedelic substance that had only limited effects on Demigods? Wouldn't it imply that what we call insanity and find unbearable and impossible to explain under psychedelic trips was supposed to be the basic, intuitive experience of the Demigods?

The greeks had the Eleusian Mysteries, ceremonies and rites that were held at the temple of Eleusis in honour of Demeter and Persephone. The cult was already old at the time of the greek city states.
Part of the mysteries that demanded a vow of secrecy of the initiated was the consumption of Kykeon, a ritual drink.

The mysteries were of great importance in greek culture and many greeks and neighbouring cultures partook in the ceremonies. Most ancient greeks whose names you heard, were very likely initiates.
The Kykeon is said to have contained wine and barley. The exact recipe is lost to time and secrecy. There are however speculations of the active ingredients. Hofman postulated that the grain used was infected with the parasitic ergot fungus, containing ergotamines, chemically close to LSD.
Another possibility is psychoactive mushrooms. A psylocibe species are possibly Amanita.
A third is that it was an ayahuasca analogue of syrian rue and acacia.

In mesoamerica the consumption of psilocybe mushrooms was widespread. Maya, Mazatec, Aztek, Zapotec and other cultures consumed it.
The use was ritual, at festivities as well as recreational. The Aztec name for the mushrrom was Teonanacatl, felsh of the gods. It grows abundantly in the whole region.

The use was outlawed as devil worship by the Spanish and persecuted, but remained alive in secret, especially in remote areas.

In the 1950s, Gordon Wasson was initiated by the Mazatec healer Maria Sabina, who worked with the mushrooms. A subsequent article in the Times magazine lead to a widespread popularity of the rediscovered entheogen and a pilgrimage to the Mazatec village of Maria Sabina.
She faced hostility from her own people for having shared the secret. Many saw it as treason. Maria Sabina however kept sharing the mushroom with all that asked for it, believing that it was a gift to be shared with those who seek it.
