Try SCA first and go from there. They're probably more newbie friendly and can get you started faster so you can decide if it's something that you actually like without spending too much.

SCA is relatively safe because hands and head are off limits. That doesn't mean they don't get hit, but it means they're not a primary target. Of course, it also means that the technique is completely different and about as historically accurate as your average backyard LARPing.

I only know of Battle of Nations but good luck competing on that if you aren't a slav. And that's if you somehow manage to be in the top 10 or 5 of your country
