The Vietnamese victory in Vietnam is probably the one thing that keeps some quantity of romanticism in me. They were totally outclassed in terms of resources and technology but still won because they were a unified force fighting for their country instead of us burgers who were fighting for some imperceptible geopolitical advantage.

Which general, and when/where did this happen? All I've ever heard of the Japanese forces in Vietnam at the end of WW2 is that a lot of them ended up actually handing over their weapons to the Vietminh, and some of them even trained the Vietnamese to use them.

No they weren't, the north was constantly being supplied by the USSR and China, they even had modern interceptors and armour. The only groups who really got shafted technology wise were some arvn units, local vc, and various cidg groups who were still running around with ww2 and older surplus.
