Why did he practically beg Nicky to declare war on Japan and then refuse to send help to Russia when the war actually started?

>From November 1894 onward, Wilhelm had been writing letters praising Nicholas as Europe's defender from the "yellow peril", assuring the Tsar that God Himself had "chosen" Russia to defend Europe from the alleged Asian threat.

>During the war, Nicholas who took at face value Wilhelm's "yellow peril" speeches, placed much hope in German intervention on his side, and more than once, Nicholas chose to continue the war out of the belief that the Kaiser would come to his aid.

>A recurring theme of Wilhelm's letters to Nicholas was that "Holy Russia" had been "chosen" by God to save the "entire white race" from the "yellow peril", and that Russia was "entitled" to annex all of Korea, Manchuria, and northern China up to Beijing.[42] Wilhelm went on to assure Nicholas that once Russia had defeated Japan that this would be a deadly blow to British diplomacy, and the two emperors, the self-proclaimed "Admiral of the Atlantic" and the "Admiral of the Pacific" would rule Eurasia together

>When Nicholas replied that he still wanted peace, Wilhelm wrote back in a telegram "You innocent angel!", telling his advisors "This is the language of an innocent angel. But not that of a White Tsar!"

Based Wilhelm. He also sent troops late to the Boxer rebellion.

what the fuck did that retard expect? The German fleet to go all the way to the pacific? Nicholas was just being overly clingy to his pen-pal

Wilhelm and most of the Western world was scared of an Asia dominated by Japan. It followed that the treaties they forced out of China would be nullified if industrialized Japan ran the show.

So Wilhelm was like "yo bro, you're in a good position to do something about this." Then Russia shit the goddamn bed. Germany had it's own problems in dealing with France and the UK who didn't want to share any of the colonial wealth with this upstart. And indeed Germany ended up losing their Asian colonies to Japan in WWI.

>Germany backs Russia
>Britain backs its only ally Japan and sinks the German prized navy
Same as why France didn't back Russia despite them actually being legit allies not just pen pals, would have hurt the Russians more than helped them as Britain ruled the waves.

The Battle of Jutland proved that attempting to sink the German navy would have been quite costly. Not to mention that Britain would politically isolate herself if she sided with Japan in a conflict against fellow European powers - let alone family, which the royal families of Germany and Russia were.

>The Battle of Jutland proved that attempting to sink the German navy would have been quite costly.

The war against Japan was in 1905, the German Navy at this point is still vastly outclassed by the Brits and all pre dreadnought.

>Not to mention that Britain would politically isolate herself if she sided with Japan in a conflict against fellow European powers - let alone family,

The UK almost went to war after the Russian Navy attempted to sink British fishing trawlers.

Likewise German expansion effectively guaranteed the UK wouldn't be isolated

Well it's what the russian fleet did kek

If the UK sided with Japan over fellow Europeans it would most certainly be isolated. In particular if their actions forged a Russo-German alliance that would most certainly dominate continental politics.

>If the UK sided with Japan over fellow Europeans it would most certainly be isolated.

Not wanting to isolate or declare war on the UK was one of the big reasons why France didnt honor their alliance with the Russians.

>In particular if their actions forged a Russo-German alliance that would most certainly dominate continental politics.

As the Spartans said to Philip "if". Not only would they be breaking the Entente with the UK which they entered into a year earlier to contain Germany, they would essentially be sacrificing their navy which even when combine with the German and Russian would have been no match.

A Russo-German alliance would be reason enough to make France reconsider since the UK would be no help on their continent with their joke of a border police disguised as an army. The UK never was and never will be a reliable partner for France since they're not a continental power.

Yet the prospect of an Anglo French alliance was enough to silence the German sabre rattling and promises.

>he UK never was and never will be a reliable partner for France since they're not a continental power.

They play a complimentary role combining their naval power and resources with French land power and resources. Remember that almost 1 in 3 Germans who died in WWI died because of the British naval blockade.
