The cause for the war in its basics is that the serbs wanted to take control of yugoslavia after Tito died.

The other republics didn't want this and push came to shove.

Bosnia has an extremist muslim president, people didnt want to live under muslim rule again so a shitstorm started.
The goverment started importing jihadist into the millitary, and the serbians just tried to protect their own poeple.
For example ,srebrenica was supposed to be a un saveheaven, but was actually a muslim millitary camp put into the serbian republic in bosnia. They went around burning down and killing everyone on religious holidays in the serbian villages around it, women and children , everyone. Serbians got pissed of, went to srebrenica and told the women and older people to leave, the millitary man that stayed behind could choose to surrender, which didnt got killed.
Sarajevo is a bit more complicated, the city was NOT supposed to be seized, that coulve been done easily much faster. The bosnian goverment didnt allow anyone to leave the city first, muslim majarities fucked the other civillians over , serbian millitary encirceld the city so it wouldnt fall to jihadist, helping their people who were captured inside of it, etc.,
