How the actual fuck did 42,000 Romans beat 120,000 slaves, that were led by fucking gladiators?
>>
>>3368943
gladiators were trained in 1v1 combat/small group combat, they were unprepared for troop tactics
>>
>>3368943
Crassus was much more able leader than most normies think
>>
>>3368943
God hated the slaves so he therw his lot in with the romans

3 of the 10 Rules of War:

1.The number of your soldiers is of no importance if they are incapable of following commands and carrying out orders.

2. Your soldiers are of no importance if they are not properly equipped, fed, and maintained by a leader or kingdom during the time of war.

3. Your soldiers are of no importance if they are not trained and able to handle the stress of war.
>>
>>3368943
Gee, i wonder how professional soldiers beat a malnourished mob.
>>
>>3368943
Better trained, disciplined and equipped I'd imagine
>>
>>3368943
Tactics, training, equipment, discipline, experience.

Fighting in a pit does not prepare you to lead in large scale combat, nor does it train you to fight as part of a unit.
>>
>>3368943
Because the Roman strategy was particularly well suited to fighting unorganized mobs who would charge at the them, the gladiators were trained in a style of fighting the Romans were both used to, and effective against.

Crassus Isolated Spartacus by building a wall around regium. Spartacus was supposed to leave the peninsula with his comrades, but the pirates who promised to provide ships lied to him.

The battle was Spartacus's desperate move. His men were starving and dying due to resources being cut off.

Those "disciplined soldiers" got btfo multiple times by Spartacus.
>>
For reasons that should be fairly obvious, Gladiators were not trained in actual military combat
>>3369060
That's because they were expecting to be able to sweep them up fairly quickly and easily. Crassus came in when it was evident that they actually needed to treat them like a serious threat, and that throwing any arbitrary leader at them was not working.

Dude, we're talking history here
/tv/ is that way

3:1 ratio is not enough for "quantity is a quality all of its own"

Number 2 is a bit Nebulous. Hannibal had a hodgepodge of troops, and he lasted like 20 years in foreign territory with minimal, if any, support from Carthage.

He had fertile lands to thrive

Superior tactics
>>
>>3368943

The fact that the rebellion even lasted as long as it did is often held up as an example of how the Roman Republic was starting to unravel in the 1st century BC.

>Gladiators were not trained in actual military combat

Spartacus wasn't a typical gladiator. He had once been part of the Roman Army, until he deserted for unknown reasons, and was punished by being made a slave. He knew how Romans fought, and it made him an especially dangerous enemy, just like how Arminius the German later used his knowledge of Roman tactics to defeat them at Teutoburg Forest.
>>
>>3368943
Superior numbers beyond a certain point really don't make any difference. The tactical field is only so large and can only hold so many combatants at once.
