That depends on which city state you're talking about. Spartan women were suprisingly free compared to other city states because the men were so busy with military practises that they partially had to pick up the work.
Athenian women were a lot less free in this regard, but most of their rules on how women were to act (like staying inside unless accompanied by a man) were largely ignored for practical reasons. Women were also very important in Athenian religion and religious festivals.
