Why do the Western Samurai (Shimazu, Mori, Otomo Sorin, etc) appear way less in media than the other ones (such as Uesugi, Takeda, Date and even most Oda retainers)?
The Shimazu brothers were very capable and won many times while highly outnumbered. Mori Motonari was an amazing strategist. But they hardly ever appear in media, except on Nobunaga's Ambition games.

What media are you even talking about

Japanese one. Series, films, manga, anime.
Even on Koei stuff. On Warriors Orochi 3, you had the Tachibana couple and Shimazu Yoshihiro.
Mori Motonari, Yoshihisa, Iehisa, etc don't appear.

Any sengoku period animu and manga I've ever read or watched has had plenty of the "less popular" figures

We are watching/reading different series, then...
But I wonder why Western Samurai are less common in media.

Through whatever circumstances a stronger mythos built up behind those particular figures over time and nip media is just as stagnated as western where they keep re-examining the same historical people or times or whatever over and over again
Same reason why it's never about the Onin war which could be cool too, it always needs to be some Nobunaga circlejerk
