Britain and France have always invaded empty jungles and deserts like Africa and Australia. Never could they envision a full scale invasion of China. The farthest Britain went was capture a few ports. Japan, on the other hand, was the second nation in all of History to completely wreck China. Ok sure, Japan wouldn’t still have them today but the point is that the war in China was a huge drain on the Japanese for virtually no return on the investment.

Had Japan stayed put, they would have had the necessary resources and could have strong-armed the Allies into granting “independence” for SE Asia during the war (that is, Japanese political and economic control) then joined the fight against the Nazis (with nominal military forces, providing mostly economic aid, while gaining access to Western tech) and came out of WWII as one of the Good Guys and the saviors of the Asian peoples from the racist White colonizers and gotten a seat on the UN Security Council.

The Soviets weren’t able to do anything in Asia until late 1945 and by that point, the Japanese would have Korea and Manchuria (and possibly other Asian territories, like French Indochina and the Dutch East Indies) solidly under control and part of their economic/political/cultural system.
