Fun fact, that fortress was built by the French.

There are some ruins at the base that had crumbled into nothing from years of neglect (In Africa?! You don't say!), and there are some photos of that, but there is no reason to believe that the original Africa structure was anything as impressive as the French fortress that stands today.

Only the corners of the structure are based on the original design, such as the French archaeologists could infer it. The rest, including the entire front of it with the three symmetrical "towers", was purely a French design, and it shows; the style is inspired by French baroque. There is nothing about its design that is African.
