Lots of people who served in the German military and government during WW2 also worked for the new German governments afterwards, so what? He never actually commanded soldiers in combat and never committed any war crimes.

Well, the commies were at the door, I guess they figured the nazis were a lesser evil. Still, the relation between fascists (and the far right in general) and nazis is pretty complex (or at least seems to be, I'm no expert).

In France, for example, where the far right had seen a huge growth after WW1 and even seemed in a good position for a coup, it was immediately divided after the armistice. They had generally been extremely anti-German and anti-German style nationalism, but the Vichy regime seemed like a dream come true for many of them. Maurras even called to support it, while disaproving of the collaboration. And so some collaborated, but many immediately joined the resistance. Way before the communists too, who had received orders from Moscow to stay put, and the left in general, who were the ones who voted Pétain in.
