To answer your question, America never had a "Free Market"TM, because one, America has always endorsed tariffs, even the founding fathers, even though they were slack on domestic regulation and taxation, used tariff to fund the state. Two, in the past, technical monopolies were very common, even in smaller towns in the west, there might only be one shop you can shop from, that is why things are cheaper in cities, more competition, in the past, there was no Amazon or EBay, and transportation was a lot weaker compared to now, which only fueled local monopolies.
