The biggest meme for the Anti-Science Church is the Galileo Controversy, which was only an issue, because Galileo couldn't handle that his work didn't overthrow centuries of Aristotelian thought. Had Galileo not then written a tract against the Pope, he would never have been deemed a heretic. The Pope basically used his theological power to silence a political enemy.
The Pope was only so sensitive, because of the Counter Reformation, which sought to restore severity to the Religion of the Catholic Church in the wake of the much more zealous, religiously focused Protestants.
Protestants are also the cause for Fundies, who are the biggest cause of Anti-Religious Athiests around

Sounds like the Pope's fault

It was Galileo's for not incorporating Kepler's findings into his research, which would have allowed his work to have more evidence behind it. But, the environment that allowed the situation to occur as it did was the Protestant's fault

Pope didn't fuck up, Galileo did. All he had to do was solidify his argument or not chimp out when it was put under consideration.

He probably could have gotten away with chimping out too, if he hadn't Padua
