There's actually some truth in that.
The "lithuanian cultural revival" that occurred before and during the Interwar can be wholly described as "WE'RE NOT FUCKIGN POLANDIBLES".
Obviously, right after this chimpout and rejection of the one thing that made us somewhat human in the first place, everything went to shit.

The largest linguistic groups at the time were those speaking Jewish (61,847) and Polish (47,795). Other groups included Russian (30,967), Belarusian (6,514) and Ukrainian (517), Lithuanian (3,131), German (2,170), Tartar (722) and Latvian (184) speaking communities.

Even though our history is difficult, being together in one union had quite a few benefits.
Our cities flourished in growth and trade, due to polish influences, the westernization of Lithuanian lands went quicker.
Thanks to the polish, we resisted teutonic "colonization" of our lands, unlike in Latvia or Estonia.
Instead of orthodoxy, thanks to Poland, we celebrate Catholic traditions.
Not to mention current importance of Poland to us today, both economically and militarily.

Thank you Poland.

Lithuanians actually descend from Ptolemy IX's unnamed child born to a black male slave. The young lad was exiled at birth to the great unknown north with a retinue of his own slaves and a chest of gold to support himself. Over time he and his descendants were able to conquer vast areas stretching right to the Sea of Japan, covering much of present-date Russia, before eventually losing much of its lands in successive wars against the retro-neo-neo-Finnish Khaghanate.

A fun fact for the day.

1916: According to the census of 14 December 1916 by the occupying German forces at the time, there were a total of 138,794 inhabitants in Vilnius. This number was made up of the following nationalities: Poles 53.67% (74,466 inhabitants), Jews 41.45% (57,516 inhabitants), Lithuanians 2.09% (2,909 inhabitants), Russians 1.59% (2,219 inhabitants), Germans 0.63% (880 inhabitants), Belarusians 0.44% (644 inhabitants) and others at 0.13% (193 inhabitants)

1931: 196,345 inhabitants.[68] A census of 9 December 1931 reveals that Poles made up 65.9% of the total Vilnius population (128,600 inhabitants), Jews 28% (54,600 inhabitants), Russians 3.8% (7,400 inhabitants), Belarusians 0.9% (1,700 inhabitants), Lithuanians 0.8% (1,579 inhabitants), Germans 0.3% (600 inhabitants), Ukrainians 0.1% (200 inhabitants), others 0.2% (approx. 400 inhabitants). (The Wilno Voivodeship in the same year had 1,272,851 inhabitants, of which 511,741 used Polish as their language of communication; many Belarusians lived there.

I think it's just because of the Cold War. And the fact that most nations there belong to the same linguistic group. Americans don't think central/eastern Europe is distinct enough because most of those nations were repressed culturally until 25 years ago.
One example National Lampoon's movie about the Eurotrip. UK, Italy, France and Germany. Maybe for them you're not significant unless you have famous landmarks. But just look at it.

Lithuania never really was a bitch of the Germans.
Germans controlled Klaipēda for a long time, and the Teutonic Order controlled Žemaitija for a couple of years.
Latvia was also quite autonomous under the Russian Empire, the local Baltic German elite held most of the power.
Also, Latvians are traditionally Lutheran, although Latgale is mostly Catholic due to the counter-reformation. There are also a lot of Russians (both Old Believers and newer Soviet immigrants) in Latgale, so it's a place where all 3 major sects of Christianity meet.

In terms of economy, they are pretty much equal, Lithuania is a bit ahead.
Also, Lithuania has a Polish minority. and a very small Russian minority. Poles used to live near Daugavpils but not anymore. Latvia's Russian minority is quite large (slightly over 25%), same in Estonia.

Well all the "cool shit" mostly involves Poland, with Lithuania playing a support role. Modern national pride is based on entirely different things than at the time. It's based on shared culture and language, something that began eroding with the Polish-Lithuanian Union. So people don't care if a great battle was won by some Czerczwszciecz, even though he's technically the Hetman of Lithuania.

I went to school in the Chicago area. Historically, Polish immigrants have always been quite prevelant in Chicago. In fact, the third most spoken language in Illinois is Polish. I'm not too sure about what the Lithuanians were doing there, but I've ran into some Lithuanians generally across Illinois so I guess its not too uncommon. In fact, there was a murder case in downstate Illinois, (my grandparents live downstate so I go there quite often,) where the suspect was cheating on his wife, the victim, with a Lithuanian college girl.

>>3340859
I don't really have any in depth stories about them because I didn't really hang out with them much. They were really nice though and spoke good English even though they spent several years of their childhood in Poland/Lithuania. They were also pretty smart as I ran into them alot in AP and honors classes. In comparison, they probably made up ~15% of the school population but made up a third of the AP classes in a school of several thousand kids. The only bad thing about them was the fact that I lived close to where they would have a lot of their house parties where they would blare out music. A lot of the music was your average contemporary American music, but sometimes they would play Polish music, and I think they played some Lithuanian music as well but I couldn't really tell. Being the relatively nationalistic Poles/Lithuanians that they are, they often put up flags of Poland or Lithuania above the garage or something, but I don't rememeber them ever putting up a Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth flag up.

Chicago has the largest community of Lith Americans out of all the cities in the USA, m8. Lots of Jews and Poles, too, I've heard.
It's the Wilno/Vilnius/Vilne of the New World.
>don't rememeber them ever putting up a Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth flag up

Thanks, I didn't know that there are a lot of Lithuanian Americans in the Chicago area. You hear a lot about the Poles around here due to the fact that we have Casimir Pulaski day, and because of the sheer fact that they are a relatively major ethnic group here. I thought the Lithuanians were here for some weird foreign exchange program or something lol.

>Don't really think they're sold anywhere.
I thought that maybe they'd go autistic enough and try to buy a flag online, or even make one themsleves. I didn't really expect it myself, but it was something fun to think about.

The the greatest tragedy of them all: Muscovy rose to power and win the claim to being Rus.

It's an interesting story actually, this is what i know personally, i hope someone will correct me if im wrong:

The Lithuanians conquered a lot of Ruthenian territory and all the Ruthenian nobility was accepted and equal to Lithuanian nobility, also the lithuanians had no literacy so Ruthenian was used as a state language

I believe the name of this state was the grand dutchy of lithuania, ruthenia and samogidia

so most of the land was ruthenian(belarus and ukraine) the lithuanians speakers remained in their historic territory

Why does the Lithuanian flag look african? Perhaps it has to do with Lithuanians being plebs?
>>
>>3345478
When we made ours, the term "african flag" was non-existent.

Considering it was the longest political union in European history and basically a marriage out of reason that was kept alive because of the benefits it seems like a huge waste on behalf of temporary politics. Especially considering fluent nature of nationality in 16th-17th century.

I mean, it was originally created by the same Baltic people that inhabit the area today.
The ruling class were pagan ethnic Balts at first, then Catholic ethnic Balts later.
All of the capitals of GDL reside in the current territory of the Republic of Lithuania.
How are they not related?

They're not related because Belarus need to justify its existence somehow.
>>

Old Belarus used the same colors (white and red) and coat of arms as the Duchy. Are they just larping making use of the fact that modern Lithuania rejects their legacy or are they right?
Who are they? Belarusian tribes existed way before the Commonwealth.

>Belarusian tribes existed way before the Commonwealth.
true. it was called principality of polotsk
>>
>>3345785
There's nothing wrong with them using those symbols. They were an important part of the Duchy and there's no denying it. What's wrong is bullshit claims like "Lithuanians are Samogitians and just stole their name" or "Vytautas was a slav" etc.

Ethnically speaking, Belarusians descent from several East Slavic tribes such as Kriviches and Dregoviches and are completely unrelated to the Baltic Lithuanians.

It's such a pity. Russians had a chance to have a western-style kingdom but because of poles and catholicism i guess it was missed and Moscow took over. Oh well.

>Russians had a chance to have a western-style kingdom but because of poles and catholicism i guess it was missed and Moscow took over
it's because of russians eastern slavs lost any hope of being western

poles kept lithuania, western part of belarus and ukraine in western civilzation. ruskies tried to enforce their barbaric lack of culture.

What feuds? It was the most stable political union in European history. Or one of them at least. Depends if you count from the personal or real union. The truth is that the only reason Poles ever realize that something is off is when they hear stories about Lithuanians acting like shit to Polish tourists or whatever problems Polish diaspora has. Then everybody is like "Wait what? Why? What's going on?"

Ethnic Lithuanians were peasants and lived in countryside.
They were minority in cites, but majority overall.
