Jerusalem

What was the actual reason for the Crusades retaking the holy land? It often cost crusaders their entire fortune, all their men, and a quarter of their life between travel, expenses, and fighting. Was there any reason besides religious purpose for a crusader to try and reclaim Jerusalem of any significant reason to hold Jerusalem in Christian hands?
>>
>>3334813
Not really. Pretty much just to restore the holiest city to Christian hands and to show the might of Latin Christendom

what did he mean by that?

Still not sure entirely but who ever wrote it was a genius. I mean really, what a great but simple line to use

Actually there is a theory that the Pope did this to stop the incessant wars in France and use those men elsewhere this action was also informed by what was happening in Anatolia and the request for aid from Komenos to the Pope asking for aid against the invading Turks who had in the recent history defeated the Byzantines at Manzikert at 1071, things were looking dire in the east. So the crusades were preached and headed by a lot of the adventurous, scummy, theiving and violent atypicals to band together and pillage their way into the holy lands and kill some roaches and muzzies, and if they took Jerusalem? Heaven is promised.

No one had the pan europa "we must defend our EVROPA against mudslime hordes" attitude that people have right now, but many do push 21st century romanticism into the past.

The real romanticism of that era, if you read the chronicles, the ecclesiastical letters and such, was mainly religious, Jerusalem-Jeesuz and all that jazz.

Yea their motivations are extremely interesting since the Princes who formed the crusade were petty lords from France and Italy, there was no way they could achieve power and the ultimate regal prestige they all sought as King, what better king that a Christian King in the Holy Land?

You can see this happening the moment after Antioch was taken, Bohemond of Taranto became Bohemond I of Antioch. The principality of Antioch was founded, which laid the principal foundation of the Crusader States.

But you have to understand, they believed in all of that but in a insane medieval way that was as savage as their attitude. They did terrible things and suffered worse, they overcame it all and became true monsters when it came down to taking Jerusalem.

It is that though. They were promised forgiveness for their and their loved ones' immortal souls if they were to go on crusade.
It's just >muh eternal paradise
not hard to understand

its just a dump in the middle of the desert it was litterally worth nothing when your at the head of an empire, but if there was some external force willing to throw everything just to get it, then you bet your ass its worth just skyrecketed
>>
>>3334813
It was a personal act of devotion towards Christ to race everything and risk your life to defend Christian brothers. The fact that it cost them everything and drove them to poverty was the point.

You'd never see such selflessness or piety today and if course in 1000 years nobody will give a shit about our middle eastern wars because they were fought for oil and corporate dollars

Why is that movie so inaccuarate?
>>
>>3335039
He meant that without the context of religion, it meant nothing.

Jerusalem's holiness in all three Abrahamic religions lent it enough value that people were willing to die fighting to take it.
>>
>>3334813
There was a lot of reasons.
From political to spiritual ones.

We can only be happy it happened nowadays. Imagine if Islam and Christianity found a common ground in their worship of the same diety and worked together to conquer the rest of the world.
