This. Gas prices are way higher in Europe thanks to taxation (around 60% of the final price here in Germany, so prices are around 1,30€ per LITER). Driving a gas guzzling shitbox is oftentimes more expensive than buying a new car.

As for the stick vs auto, it seems to be mostly a cultural thing. It's fascinating to see how persistent seemingly random things can be in a society.
German toilet bowls for example have a different shape compared to French toilet bowls, which again are shaped differently than American ones.
Apparently the reason for this was that examining one's feces to check for diseases was a thing at some point and the shape just kinda stuck.

With an automatic transmission, you develop the engine to the transmission.

The engines these days, with emmissions regulations and market pressures, have a more specific power/torque bands.

Couple that with warranty and relailbility requirements. If a car is 'fool proof', you can put a better guarantee to all your components.

Also, transmissions are designed for running spec in stress reversal cycles (within a range and average). When you dont shift properly, you 'hammer' the transmission and reduce the lifetime of the drivetrain as a whole.

In italy, noone drives on automatic. Its not a choice, in the sense that people think about it and then decides to opt for manual, its that normal cars comes with manual, and that is that. Automatic is for people who cant drive good anymore, say for example elders starting to lack strenght and coordination.
