Sulla is one of the most interesting and complex historical villains. He was obviously extremely charismatic and an excellent military leader (he won the grass crown, the highest achievement in the Roman military). And it's fair to say that Marius's crowd started the bloodshed. Sulla was bloodthirsty and harsh, but he was trying to restore republican values and it's pretty remarkable that he chose to step down from ultimate power.
