Why did it make sense to dismantle the empire? Was it really that expensive to hold? Did Britain just destroy itself by participating in WW2?

Fill me in, /his/. How does an empire just fall apart and the greatest empire in the world become a second rate regional power in the span of a lifetime? Who is at fault?

Britain had been proven weak by WW2 (Dunkirk, Singapore, Rommel...etc) and thus wasn't respected anymore
As they knew their colonies would start revolting, and win (just like the Spanish ones after the Napoleonic Wars), Britain released them before it could happen to avoid the humiliation
