Post ye olde memes.
Ok ok. So we joke about this now, but Jews were literally a meme in Middle age art pieces.
Most commonly represented by their pointed hard and noses, depictions of Jews were always strongly identifiable.

The people in the pointed hats. At some point in the middle ages, someone thought it would be funny to make them wear stupid hats.
And it was

Was this art actually intended to be funny, or have I fallen for the meme that people in the Middle Ages were generally pretty humourless and we only "accidentally" find this kind of art funny today?

humor is pretty much a constant

Because he was seen as a saint or as God. Jesus is usually looked at as the first Christian.
"Irish porridge" became a bit of an ecclesiastical meme from the 5th century until the 10th, usually used in reference to confusing or esoteric theology. It originates from Pelagius, who St Jerome declared "had been raised on Irish porridge", just a poetic way of referencing that he was Irish. When John Scotus Eriugena's works were scrutinised by a particular church council, he stated proudly that he had been influenced by Pelagius. During their final judgement, the council declared that he should be proud to have his work judged to be "Irish porridge", which apparently caused everyone present to burst into laughter.
Incidentally, Eriugena would later be murdered by his students, and when asked why they'd done it, they replied "He made us think."
>>3310642

That theory was all good until those marines started seeing Kilroy in places that U.S soldiers hadn't been to yet. This led to the question - Did the Kilroy meme spread to other nations that had seen the American drawings and adopted them, or did the Americans adopt the Kilroy meme from older drawings?

Fire is essentially the element of the sacred. Djinn and angels in Islam are both made of fire iirc, while humans are made from clay.
Specifically, that painting is a depiction of Muhammad. They do exist but what few that aren't preserved far away from Wahabbis are usually destroyed. Muhammad has to be depicted immolated in Islamic art like Jesus must be depicted with a halo in Christian art. In Islamic art, Jesus is also immolated. I don't think God is ever really depicted in Islamic art.

it's just an album cover by a polish artist, the black space was originally a cut out that showed part of the inner fold. the artist also sells prints that have either a black or white space in place which is what that scan is (the black being too uniform is from the scan being touched up after the fact)

Nègre is not simply "Black". It wasn't necessarily an insult like nigger is and already was back then, but it's like saying negro.
>>3319960
Hey, can you photoshop out the nipples so I can post this on blue boards? Thanks!
>>3327168
Then why not say negro?
>>3327168
Would it have been the PC term at the time? In the US during the 19th and 20th century, Negro was the PC term used in progressive Black/White relations, before ultimately becoming pejorative at some point in the later 20th.

>>3327193
I dunno, I'm not the anon who translated it first.
>>3327194
The really PC term would have been "Noir", but nègre was kind of a middle ground. Could be used an insult, but people also used it normally. Here's an image from 1906 illustrating an article on a lynching in Atlanta that is mostly sympathetic to the Blacks, basically saying "Yeah, some Blacks did something, but those Americans went overboard again and massacred a bunch of people who had nothing to do with anything". It even says America has a "negrophobia" problem. Also, In the interwar period, there was a whole "négritude" literary movement, with African/Black francophone authors having no problem describing themselves as nègres.
Funnily enough, nowadays, even "Noir" is starting to be considered a bit iffy in some circles.
>>3325441
It says how x colonises instead of functions.
>>3328703
I should nuance a bit on the "sympathetic to the Blacks" bit: the article still says that Blacks are inferior, and that they're multiplying so quickly that Whites are worrying, and that emancipation was done too quick. But it also praises Booker Washington.
>>3312937
oh my
>>3328703
>>3328735
And in 1922, in a similar article, it's "noir" that's used, so the transition away from "nègre" is already on the way.
>>3312535
