Could one of you gents care to explain what made the Tercio such an effective formation?

You have a giant pike block ringed with gunmen and, sometimes, swordsmen. The only way to really deal with a pike block is to engage it with another pike block unless you can blast it to shit with massed field artillery - something which wouldn't really be possible until the end of the Tercio's period. If the enemy sends cavalry, they'll just get stuck on your pikes; if the enemy sends regular infantry, they'll get stuck on your pikes and blasted to shit by the gunmen; and if the enemy sends in their own pikes, your pikes will keep them at bay while your gunmen blast them to shit.
