Could an ambitious Japanese emperor have conquered China and claimed the mandate of heaven during a period of collapse and hold onto it for the mean lifespan of a Chinese dynasty?
and pass it onto succesors that could hold it for the mean lifespan of a Chinese dynasty?*
and get assimilated until complete loss of identity?

I don't see why not, yet that's beside the point. Could such an empire be founded and could it have lasted as long as one originating on the mainland? Assuming that the dynasty is established as the most propitious point in history for it to last
>Japanese emperor
When was the last time a Japanese emperor had actual power prior to Meiji?

The Emperor was in a positon of power from about the 7th to 13th centuries, would a Japanese invasion in the Five Dynasties and Ten Kingdoms period or any other interim/interregnum have brought a Japanese mandate of heaven to fruition?
Hideyoshi tried to conquer asia and got BTFO by the fucking Koreans. Unless China's fractured like in WWII they wouldn't have a chance.

Its not EU4 mate
Probably not, they couldn''t even conquer Korea. Besides, Japanese nobles have no experience commanding war in the scale of their Chinese counterpart.

It would be pretty hard to maintain supply lines across the Sea of Japan. Taking Korea was already impossible before industrialization. And China is really fucking big.
