What if China had stayed disunited thanks to the warlord period, and neither the CCP nor the KMT had managed to take it all over after the Japanese left?
Would there be separate recognised sovereign states like the Kingdom of Sichuan, the Guangdong Republic, the People's Republic of Manchuria, a Republic of China rump state, and so on, with changes of borders by military force frowned on by the international community? Or would there be a single recognised legitimate government that has carte blanche to put down "provinces in revolt"?

Probably the US would back whoever was against the communists and the USSR would back whoever was for the communists. Ending up with a communist USSR-backed North China and a nationalist US-backed South China.

The korean war would have happened in china

China was recognized as an unitary state during the warlord period by foreign powers. I don't see why that would change.

>I don't see why that would change.
For practical reasons maybe. Like, if a breakaway Sichuan starts selling their natural gas to you it would be helpful to recognize Sichuan as an entity.
>>
Possibly, but the idea of an unified China is so deeply rooted in every Chinese, each individual state will try to conquer each other and until there is only one left.
>>
>>3305208
I don't think you have any idea how existential a unified state was to the Chinese people.
>>
>>3306907
For people who find a unified state so important they sure did spend a lot of centuries not being a unified state.

so when will Taiwan and Hong Kong attempt to conquer the PRC?
>>
>>3309331
When the PRC is weak or destabilized enough. Which is not in any near future, but the point still holds.

>For people who find a unified state so important they sure did spend a lot of centuries not being a unified state.
Let's list the major fragmentation periods, shall we?
>Nanbeichao Period - 169 years
>End of Han and Three Kingdoms- 96
>5 Dynasties and 10 Kingdoms Period- 72
>Chu-Han Contention- 4
That's a total of 341

Let's throw in foreign invasions like the Jin-Song-Mongol Period and the threeway between Shun, fallen Ming, and Qing dynasties and that number jumps up to 400-500 years.

Meanwhile Imperial China is 2132 cumulative years.

Even if we add up Modern Chink history, China spent more time united than divided.

Hong Kong won't be a thing. It would be overcome and made a capital by whosoever Post-fallen-PRC warlord commands either the Hong Kong Garrison or the entire Guangzhou Command.

Taiwan stands a chance but it gets SJWer by the day.
>>

This map has been outdated since 2016. The military regions are now divided into five theaters. The Southern theater is still commanded from Guangzhou though.
>>
The Cold War wouldn't allow that to happen. The US and friends would back the KMT and allied warlords against the Chicoms. The most balkanized it could get would be a communist Northwest vs a Nationalist Southeast with perhaps an independent Tibet aligned with the West and/or a indepndent Xinjiang aligned with the East.

Chinese reliance on the societ union for protection might mean that if they experience a sino-soviet split like OTL that the Soviet's could pressure them into returning Inner mongolia to the People's Republic of Mongolia.

Wouldn't the UK just back Hong Kong?
