The cultural influences are Western Malay, Chola dynasty india, Eastern Malaysia and Melanesians, Swahili (both Bantu and Arab), Omani/Yemeni and now French.

There are several kingdoms derived from Malagasy derived from the island itself (most famously the shortlived Merina dynasty) and several minor kingdoms in Comoros.

Arguably the most famous ruler is Queen Rabodoandrianampoinimerina a shrewd ruler againist the growing western imperalist powers on the island.
