Akhenaten tried to limit the gods by his definition of the gods. They Egyptians tried to limit the gods by their definition of the gods in return. Both are somewhat foolish in the eyes of the gods - though Amenhotep was ultimately more in the wrong than the people because he tried to limit the form of the godhead more.

The gods are before man, before language, before the first caveman scrawl - human descriptions of them are supplanted by the gods (Brahman is a useful concept to understand here).
