wrong. medici and medicine come from the same latin word "medicus", which means doctor. it's likely that the medici descended (in the distant past before they gained any clout in Florence) from some doctors or apothecaries, hence the "pills" that are in their family crest.

Because it is so closely historically related to Greece, and after the fall of Byzantium the ancient greek works were exported there at a greater rate. Atleast that's the simple storyline

Wool was a major part of their economy, and wool is a predictable, lucrative industry for the time. Guild masters knew how much wool they were likely to have at first shear based on how many sheep they had, and they knew how long it would take to comb the wool, and how long to weave it. Simce everyone knew how the wool market was going to turn out any given year, it made it possible for the powerful families to loan out money, which is how they really got rich. The Rich patrons had enough money to fund the Renaissance.

extremely rich nobility become patrons of the arts because they have nothing else to spend their money on, whereas more economically minded rulers had to be wary of not spending too excessively
