Hoping someone here can help.

Long ago, in a philo class, we were told about the ethics of working in a chemicals weapons factory. Whomever the guy was we were learning about summed it up like this: "do your best, because if you quit or get replaced, someone with more deadly ideas could come behind you and take your job - and you have those extra people killed on your soul. If you make Nerve Agent A and it kills X, but he comes and makes Nerve Agent A+ which kills X+, you're responsible for the additional bodies"

Any clues who this was? Took that class 10 years ago and it's been on my mind. Thanks.

I know you're paraphrasing another person's argument and not advancing your own but doesn't that reasoning go both ways? Like what if the person who replaces you doesn't have half of your qualifications or experience so overall production goes down and less people get killed by chemicals produced in that plant?

Very much aware of that, which is why I'm searching for the source material. Because I agree, that regresses into it only being ethical for the mentally handicapped to be the weapons designers we employ.

>and you have those extra people killed on your soul
>you're responsible for the additional bodies
What the fuck kind of guilt tripping bullshit is this? Since when do I become responsible for literally everyone else actions. The trolley problem has gone too far

Yeah, I know. It was on my already for a long time, as I work for a major defense contractor, but the issue of pre-emptive strikes and the ethics of what we do came up at a Happy Hour, so I want to re-discover the author of these concepts.

Congratulations, you've stumped me. Literally what the fuck?
