It's going that way. Or at least, everyone is becoming increasingly non-religious. To say Ireland is a 'meme country based on religion in a world which is only becoming more and more secular' is absolutely fucking retarded. We're as secular in practice as any other western european country outside of scandinavia. We're no more based on religion than the UK or Spain or France or Germany. In Ireland in particular, people have grown more suspicious of the church than most other places. They've had their reputation destroyed after the years of abuse and kiddy fiddling they committed with impunity. The younger generation, like any other developed country, doesn't give two fucks about religion and the older generation in their 40s-60s were the ones getting diddled the hardest, so they don't give as much of a fuck anymore either.

Not that it matters too much anyway. The religious divide in the north is secondary to the divide in national identity. We'd probably be in a pretty similar situation now even if both countries had the exact same religion from the start.
