Cultural Revolution was just Mao's personal power struggle to maintain his reputation and power. The thing is the Chinese cultural revolution was a mere material cleansing of history by the modernist fire. It failed to actually sap the Confucian roots of the society out since it was superficially concerned with the aesthetic-functional side of things as per modernist perspective.
