A curiosity:
In Romanian "şleahtă" also means "group of people" in a negative way, like clique, band of people. It's sometimes used as an insult for corrupt politicians and rich people although it's archaic and nobody thinks about the origin of the word.

Comes from German schlachten, and is used in Polish too as "zaszlachtować", meaning to slaughter".
