It's the original arms of the family, the first described all the way back in the 11th century/that are on tombs of ancestors but we have no idea at what point the coat of arms changed. We have extensive records up to the 14th century, but before that it's pretty murky. Apparently the ancestral "castle" (more like fortified house) was burned down then, along with a lot of earlier records. So in earlier primary sources ancestors pop up, but no description of their arms. And once we do have descriptions again, in the 14th century, they have changed. Typically these inescutcheons are of pretense, used by women, indicating their origins after their marriage, and are not passed down, so it's a bit of a family enigma. At least three generations of I'm assuming very bored men have gone slightly nuts over it.
