It was extremely rare and usually happened during a bloody stalemates which looked like the opposing forces are just going to grind each other into nothing, not before battles.

It's something that happened frequently in the "Middle Ages" as most disputes were usually very small and between local parties. It was similar to litigation and arbitration before heading to court. The last chance to work it out now that everyone's showing what they have.

It was basically 'bring yourself and ten men, no more' they talked, basically just rehashed a conversation they'd had through letters except the German offered to be Caesar's friend across the Rhine and come to his aid whenever he wanted. Caesar said 'nah, I've already defeated you and just wanted you to see my face before it happened.'
