Because there was just as much nonsense behind an understanding of genetics at the time as there was science.
Even now there is a great number of people that don't understand genetics and believe everything is absolutely predetermined and that everyone is an exact copy of their parents and that they do not have any free will.
Debates of free aside people that promote the idea of genetic totality and deny environment and conditioning are completely nonsensical.
