When you sit down to actually consider it, Mahayana makes much more sense than Theravada (i.e. HINAYANA)

Hinayana reference is referred to the dead buddhist schools whom Mahayana were speaking of. Theravada is not part of Hinayana as its newer than those Hinayana schools.
Hinayana and Mahayana stem from the same branch. Theravada comes from a different branch all together and is closer to the teachings of the original councils of Buddhism that was formed after his death.
All the dharma vehicles should be respected.
