I tried once and it was the literary equivalent of slamming my face into a brick wall

I could hardly understand half of what the characters said, like I understood the basic premice of what was going on, like some noblewoman trying to get her son a spot in a guards regiment, or some kids running around the palace, or some guys having a drinking bet, but I feel like I missed out on a ton of hidden motivations and characterization. It felt like you could only understand what is really going on unless you had inside knowledge of 19th century russian court intrigue
