Non-specialized historians can't give Byzantium justice, they can never appreciate the Asia-to-Europe trade and wealth, and the importance of religion.
Also the way that the Eastern Empire ended up ruling its land like old Persia, by giving autonomous rule to some parts to prevent revolts, is mistaken by historians to mean that this area was "lost", and no longer part of the Empire, or some such. In reality it was like appointing a manager there and giving him a fancy hat.
