Tell me about Watergate. What happened and how can Trump avoid a similar fate?

The saddest thing is that Nixon was actually an immensely popular president prior to Watergate. He was effectively guaranteed to win re-election. His entire legacy has been tainted simply because he cheated when he didn't need to.

he already won reelection, he resigned in his second term
Reminder that Nixon presided over the moon landings in their entirety.
IIRC...
>burglars get caught in the DNC headquarters
>Nixon publicly denies any involvement by him or his administration
>reporters discover that the burglars' legal fees were paid by Nixon administration
>subsequent investigation reveals that the administration was aware of the burglary
>also reveals other unsavory activities of the administration (e.g. illegal surveillance)
>nixon loses public support for 1) firing special prosecutor and 2) acting like a general scumbag on his private tapes
>nixon resigns rather than face impeachment and removal from office
>pardoned by subsequent administration and avoids criminal charges

Nixon did nothing wrong. The same people in the government behind Kennedy assassination also framed Nixon. In all of the watergate tapes Nixon never orders a break in at the hotel.
>>3252186
Yeah, and he made the decision to spy on the Democrats BEFORE he won re-election.
>>3252207
nixon never made any such decision. his crime was obstructing justice after the fact

Trump can't be impeached unless he does something illegal and its proven that he broke the law.
He's done a lot of stupid things but none of them are illegal.
The real question is how the Republican party can recover from Trump.
>>3252344
recover? The guy singlehandedly won them both the Presidency and the Senate. They need to stop trying to fuck him over out of butthurt and start working with him.
>>3252355
Republicans are shortsighted. Trump won them the White House in the present and might win it again in the future. But what happens after Trump?
Demographics will eventually catch up to the Republicans and the ones who Trump alienated will punish the Republican party for years to come.

>The guy singlehandedly won them both the Presidency and the Senate
they've controlled the senate since 2014
