Is dogmatic adherence to extreme ideologies a 20th century phenomena? Were religious peoples in earlier times as ideologically-driven as people in the 19th and 20th centuries? Are secular ideologies more dangerous than religious ones? Is modern man more susceptible to radical ideologies due to social alienation in modern industrial society?
Asking for a friend.

No, people have been stringently loyal to ideologies forever, it's strictly a human thing.

In the 1500s Polish knights went through towns on the east border and executed people who couldn't say tongue twisters but also had the highest per capata voting rate in Europe. I don't think radicalism is very new or as extreme as people see it

Of course they were ideologically driven, just look at the insane religious wars in Europe after Protestantism became a thing, or the bloodiness of the early conflict between Sunnis and Shiites. Ideological fanaticism has always been a problem.

Source, this is hilarious
I would say it's a phenomena in Western societies with the inclusion of Middle Eastern factions.
Extremism is not new, but the Industrial age allowed extremists to mass produce industrial level causalities for the first time.
