But seriously, did "rags on stick" torches exist? You know, the kind which they most used in historica movies? I mean, it seems to be a highly inefficient lighting considering you'd use up it's fuel pretty quick.
You're better off bearing a cheap clay oil lamp around or, as these people show, a lamp on a stick.

The "rag" isn't actually the fuel source on those old-timey torches. Said rag was actually soaked in a variety of slow burning substances that were what actually made the torch useful. The cloth was merely a medium to hold the fuel.
