After WW1, why was Italy given so little land, considering how

I was always under the impression they were seen as somewhat of a front runner and never fully invested until they saw a winning side emerging.

I think they were also previously aligned with AH and Germany prior to the breakout of war.

They were basically the guy on the side who yells world star while two other guys fight - that doesn't net you much cache at the bargaining table.

At the bargaining table after the war, Italy's represrntative, Orlando, embarrassed the nation but whining like a cry baby at how she deserved more for her minor efforts in WWI than what she got. Also want to mention that Italy started the war being a part of the Triple Alliance and didn't have the same industrial capacities as France, Germany or the UK so wasn't considered a major player.

They were promised quite a bit including South Tyrol (which they did get), Croatia, Albanian protectorate (I think they got that), one of Germany's former African colonies, A middle eastern colony. Italy was kinda betrayed by its greedier allies despite being apart of the big 5 powers and contributing quite a bit.

One of Wilson's preconditions at Versailles was that nations should be created and redrawn along ethnic lines, like Yugoslavia a (theoretically) pan-Slavic state. A large factor of Germany surrendering as it is in 1918 is because Austro Hungary has collapsed and a strike to Berlin was imminent,all the mutinies could be swept and the army still could fight but they couldnt turn a blind eye on the mediterranean warrior

The whole point of "the jews betrayed us, we were winning!!" is that the army was still holding in occupied territory, and the communist coup back at home forced the surrender (in reality it was starvation).
