My grandfather's uncle fought in that war, on the Russian battleship, Borodino. He didn't make it. The Japanese had a superior fleet with more advanced battleships.

It was a combination of
1. Nobody expecting japs to fight with more than stones and sticks, they modernized quickly
2. Russians being forced to fight in the Far East, where they had a small army and fleet, and had to transport their manpower by trains
