Germany and Japan had to undergo severe punitive measures in the aftermath of WWII, including ceding territory, foreign occupations, having entire clauses written into their constitution forbidding offensive wars, and in Germany's case, complete division under foreign domination for 45 years.

So why did Italy get off with such lenient terms? the only real punishments against them in their treaty was to give up all colonial possessions and pay war reparations, which were paid off in the form of trade goods and services.

So why didn't Italy get split into allied occupation zones, have their military be forbidden to wage war, or be forced to give their mediterranean islands to Britain?

Because the allies took it not the Russians, Germany and Austria were split because Russia had already taken some
Also to take land might have given the Italian communists more power thus causing Italy to fall to communism and thus make a great loss in the Cold War that had already started
>>

Because they switched sides, I guess... France didn't suffer either from the atrocities commited by Vichy, because the Free French won.
>>
Italy was treated after WW2 like Germany was after WW1: way too gently
>>
>>3238438
They surrendered earlier and then essentially joined the allies and also because they did not perform very well and as a result were not as capable of the destruction that Germany and Japan were which may have lead to less belief that they needed pacification and also not being occupied by the USSR helped.
>>
>>3238438
Because Italy isn't really a threat to anyone, so there's no need to dismember their state.
>>
>>3238438
Because the Soviets never got to Italy, they lost their entire "Empire" too

But France was on the Allied side at the right begining, and even after they lost, the Free French was created immediatly, so they always had a faction on each side (not to mention that Vichy was neutral, not Axis)

Italy however changed side at the last minute

Italy changed sides in 1943 at which point the war still hung in the balance, at least from the perspective of the allies.

1. the Western Allies wanted to secure Italy as a solid allied possession for the coming tensions with the Soviet Union, so good relations with Italy were in the West's best interests going forward. They even reversed some parts of their treaty like returning Trieste to Italy and allowed continued Italian administration of Somalia for another 25 years as a show of good faith.

2. Italy was on the whole a much more cooperative power to the Allies than they could've hoped for, with the King and a few hundred thousand Italian soldiers fighting the Germans alongside the Americans and British. From 1943 onward, Italy was treated more or less as an allied power, despite holding the title of co-belligerent on paper.

3. the government they were negotiating the treaty with after the war was the Pro-Allied monarch government, as Mussolini's fascist government already collapsed and was replaced by the end of the war, as opposed to the allies negotiating directly with the Nazi German and Imperial Japanese governments after the war, it didn't make sense to punish a government who fought as your ally, especially if it was in their best interests to keep them as an ally.

Because Italians are the goofy, almost lovable scamps of WW2
>>

italy and france case aren't the same at all
>>
>>3238438
because the italian king saw how bad things were and made a deal with the allies

>Be Italian Fascist Party
>Kick Mussolini out and broker peace with the allies, declare war on Germany
>Get shat on anyway
Poor Pietro
