The really screwed up thing is that the assassination wasn't what killed him, but rather the state of medicine at the time. The autopsy revealed that if they'd just left him alone, he would have been fine. Instead, the doctors kept probing him over and over again with unsterilized instruments, trying to get the bullet out. They ended up introducing shitloads of infections into his body, and the infections were what ended up killing him. It was this discovery, and the public outcry that followed it, that led to sterilization of medical instruments finally becoming a standard practice in the US.
