So how do people generally feel about Oda Nobunaga today? I get the feeling he's treated as a charming underdog/Caesar-like character but also evil due to the whole monk thing. Also, what's up with the Taisho era? What's with Meiji riding the expel the barbarians wave then cozying up with the British? How insane was Emperor Taisho?
>>
I like Tom Cruise, too.

Why are the Western Samurai from the Sengoku period less common in media?

Date Masamune appears in much more films, manga, anime than Mori Motonari or Shimau Yoshihiro. But my impression is that Mori and Shimazu were better generals who fought in more battles.

It has its roots in the fact that in the interior period, the Japanese were doing what China is now, selling cheap labor in order to entice American companies to outsource production. When japan's infrastructure was destroyed during ww2, most notably the fire bombing of Tokyo, they reinvested in tech mainly, thus avoiding the conflict with American industry. Americans aren't a hivemind, and in my experience, the average American opinion of Japan is very positive

OP, I have a few questions for you.

First, how much do you study about the world's history in Japan? Per example, here in Europe, history lessons were so extremely focused on Europe, and I don't remember myself stuying at school something about China or Japan until the second world war lessons. Apart from the Japanese history, which I have nowadays a lot of interest in, do you study something about us us?

Secondly, how is it actually the dayly life of a Japanese student? I'd like you to tell me everything you can, because it should be really different from any representation in anime/manga.

Thanks in advance)))

I recently learned about the Heikegani, a crab species that has a face on its back because fishermen would throw caught crabs that seemed to have a face back in the water to honor the fallen that fought in a naval battle in the area. As a result the crabs evolved to have faces on their backs.

2 question for you, OP.

1. Since Japan is largely racially homogeneous with few immigrants living there, do you harbor a hostile feeling towards them in the sense of "who are they, they don't belong here, they're not us" or are you delighted that there are foreigners in Japan? Do you find joy in interacting with them? What's the societal reaction towards them overall? And would you travel overseas to explore all the world's culture, if you could?

2. Is Japan mostly a conservative society akin to Vietnam or China with no-nos towards homosexuality and bisexuality, etc..

Hello! I am a Chinese!
When i was young my mother told me a story about the origin of Japan. The first emperor of China Qin Shi Huang sent a bunch of people to Japan to find an potion for immortality, and then those people sent there did not find the potion for immortality.

Because they were scared Qin Shi Huang would be angry and kill them they stayed in Japan. It actually makes sense to me because the time period lines up with the End of the Jomon period. What do you think about this story?

I hope you have a nice day!
>>
>>3237692
I am not OP but I think the story that you were told is plausible, because I remember something about Japan having a Chinese origin. If you watch the video "History of Japan" by Bill Wurtz, you can see the first settlers coming via the Korean peninsula. I don't know if that is correct information or something that has happened in real life, but I think if people ever walk to Japan back then, they would go through the Korean peninsula.
>>
>>3237707
yeah i mean it's a very common legend amongst the Chinese. It makes sense to me considering how fucking OBSESSED with immortality my n-word Qin Shi Huang was. It's a pretty fucking cool origin story tho

>>
>>3240510
Why did Ishida Mitsunari insult and ignore Shimazu Yoshihiro before Sekigahara and preferred to listen to Sakon Shima instead? Yoshihiro was probably the best living general in Japan at the time, wasn't he? And Ishida Mitsunari who oversaw the Korean invasions knew full well his capabilities.

Wouldn't it be better to listen to his most experienced ally?
>>
>>3240538
Best question in this thread.
>>
>>3240538
Mitsunari ignored Shimazu's suggestion of a night raid?
It says that Mitsunari thought that Ieyasu was too smart not to be prepared for a night attack.
Anyway, it seems like that this whole story was made up during the Edo period to make Mitsunari look like an Incompetent prick.
>>

>Anyway, it seems like that this whole story was made up during the Edo period to make Mitsunari look like an Incompetent prick.

Ah, that makes sense. Ishida would be crazy to completely ignore and insult someone like Yoshihiro. Because even if he won the battle, there would be bad blood between them and most of Shimazu's soldiers were safe far away in Satsuma under the capable hands of Yoshihisa.
Are there more myths created to smear the reputation of Ishida and other samurai?

In the Edo period, what was the status of land aristocracy vs court aristocracy? How did super powerful tozama daimyos such as Maeda or Shimazu compare to the fudai daimyo or the court nobles?
>>
>>3240553
I cannot come up with any specific myths created during the Edo Period,
but Mitsunari had been seen as a villain who caused the end of the Toyotomi with his imcompetence and arrogance during the Edo period,
but nowadays he is seen as more like a loyal and noble figure.
